A couple of weeks ago, I had to vend in the rain. I knew it was going to happen--every single weather forecast said the same thing. I was prepared, mentally and physically, to do it.
Physically: I made sure my tent sidewalls were clean and packed, ready to go. I brought along an extra tablecloth, for a quick throw-over, as needed, and I planned out my table setup.
Mentally: I decided I was going to vend in the rain.
I believe it's really as simple as that. Everything we do in business is a choice. Make the products, or don't. Use that supplier, or use another. Sell the products, or don't. In this case, if I chose to stay home, I would have to both
a) eat my entry fee
b) risk my reputation.
In the beginning of your outdoor vending journey, your reputation may be all you have. Sometimes you have to pay the vending fee and get your ass out there, and maybe you won't make any money that day. At the beginning, your reputation is what the show organizers will remember, and you WANT to be asked back. Sure, if you set up and there's a big storm and your tent is blown over and smashed, along with all of your products, then sure, pack it up and head home. Nobody will begrudge you that.
But if you have your tent sidewalls up, and everything is dry and intact, then be positive, outlast the rain, and you will be rewarded. Maybe financially, maybe only with your reputation. As business owners, we have to take the good with the bad, and if you face each challenge with a positive attitude and determination, then only good can come of it. You must develop tenacity--it can be learned!
Oh, and that rainy day? I was hoping to make my booth fee back. I made about 6 times my fee--a very good day, indeed. Even in the rain.
